Chandan Ka Palna, resham Ki Dori….

Chandan Ka palna, Resham Ki Dori-Hemant Kumar/Lata mangeshkar- Film Shabab 1954-Lyrics Shakeel Badauni- Music Naushad.
Shabab, released in 1954, was a musical tragedy film directed by M.Sadique. The songs were penned by Shakeel Badauni and music was given by Naushad. Although the story of the film has nothing special, the music of Naushad was a redeeming factor for the film. This fairy , Romeo-Juliet style love story revolves around a parent less prince Ratan, (Bharat Bhushan), trained in classical music, and a princess (Nutan), who is cursed by the fate that she cannot sleep . Only good music can get her to sleep. Many musicians try, but fail. Our prince tries his hand. Minister of the kingdom, plays villainous role, by telling Ratan that princess is blind and ugly to look hence not wishing Ratan to see her. He tells Princess that the singer is leper and does not wish princess to see him. A curtain is raised between them. Ratan sings this song and the princess goes to sleep. They fall for each other.
This song is apparently theme song of the film. It comes in two versions. One is male version by Hemant Kumar, when Ratan gets the princess to sleep singing the song. Second version , which is a duet of Lata- hemant Kumar, comes in the film when Ratan trains the beggars to sing this song before palace. Thus the song becomes the vehicle , which helps the Princess identify Ratan’s song and his locale.
