Marna Teri Galimein......

Marna Teri Galimein-Lata Mangeshkar-Film Shabab 1954-Lyrics Shakeel Badauni-Music Naushad
Shabab, a film made by M.Sadique and released in 1954, is a film of Nutan, long forgotten. That however does not mean that it sans of any qualities. It’s narrative is strong, interspersed with many musical gems from composer Naushad, well integrated in the story. It is a film with fair cinematography and brilliant performances from the stars, especially from lead pair of Bharat Bhushan and graciously beautiful Nutan. It is a fairy style story about an parent less infant prince  raised by a band of dacoits, and a princess (Ragini), born to a childless king. The king is delighted to have the daughter, but dismayed on learning from astrologers that a evil and ominous event will befall on her when she attains 18 th year. Both however are engaged in infancy. Thus the fates of two royal families are tied by their engagement. The prince acquires and masters the knowledge of music from his music guru. Time flies like an angel, and soon we see grown up prince (Bharat Bhushan) and gracefully beautiful princess (Nutan), with only one flaw….She cannot sleep. She will have sleep only she listens to quality music. Many musicians are summoned , but they are unsuccessful.
Our prince Ratan, hears of the challenging task and ventures to seek his chance. He is permitted and when he performs, she goes to sleep instantly. Next morning, naturally she wants to see the musician, but her Minister tells her he has gone away. She insists to find him bring back. The Minister tell her a lie that he is a leper and horrid to see. The princess is shocked but still adamant to see him. Royal powers are applied and Ratan finds himself in front of Minister, who tells him that the princess is blind as well as horribly ugly. But Ratan feels that music transcends physical beauty. Their musical lessons starts in palace, albeit a laced curtain in between them. This curtain however instead of a hindrance,  accelerates the intensity between them. One day during the lesson, the curtain burns and first time they see each other, and immediately attracted to each other. The Minister, in order to separate them, orders Ratan to leave the town immediately. He also leaves and lives with beggars and destitute.  Through them they meet each other. She renunciates the material pleasures of palace, and becomes Jogan and comes to Ratan. Minister and king get her married to with a prince. The devastated and dejected Ratan gets trapped under a rath and crippled, his both hands being damaged. While the princess is singing this song, Ratan comes to the door of palace in search of her, and while listening ,dies. Knowing that her beloved is dead, the princess also breaths her last. Thus the story ends on tragic note.
Not much, you will found in the story. It is usual Romeo-Juliet style fairy tale, in ancient India. (Locales and period not specified clearly). What makes the viewer glued to the chair is heavenly music of Naushad Ali. The songs come regularly interspersed and provide a much needed respite. By this time, the voices of Rafi and Lata, have become a regular fixture in Naushad’s music.
Scored by Naushad and written by Shakeel Badauni, the movie featured a soundtrack:
  1. “Daya Kar He Giridhar Gopal” – Amir Khan-Raag Multani
  2. “Mehlon Mein Rahne Wale” – Rafi solo
  3. “Mar Gaye Ham Jeete Ji Malik” – Lata Solo

All these song were popular.Especially the lata solos, ” Mar Gaye Ham Jeeteji”, “Jogan ban Jaoongi Saiyya Tere Karan” ,”Jo mai Janati Bisrat” and this song ” Marna Teri Galimein, Jeena Teri Galimein” were the highlights of the film. The Lata-Hemant Kumar duet ” Chandanka palna Resham Ki Dori” is also a soothing and soulful melody. Naushad really excelled in music department. Today the film is remembered only for it’s music.
