Shabab was a film produced by Bharat Bhushan and directed by M.Sadique. It was musical romantic film with tragic end. All the songs were penned by Shakkel Badayuni and music was given by Naushad. Although the story was not special, (it was fairy style script with Romeo-Juliet kind of touch at the end), the music was the redeeming factor for the film. Today the film is remembered for the heavenly music of Naushad only.

Ratan (Bharat Bhushan) is a parent less prince living with bandits. He is however trained in classical music.  Nutan plays a princess of another kingdom who is cursed with no sleep. Only a good music is able to get her to sleep. Many musicians try their hand but fail. Our prince tries and succeeds. However the diwan of the kingdom is bent upon separating them with a curtain between them. Our prince tries and succeeds. The princess goes to sleep. Next day when she wakes up, she learns from the diwan  that Ratan has left. She however is bent upon seeing him and take music lessons from him. Royal powers are exerted and Ratan is found. The music lessons of prince and princess commence there on, albeit a curtain between them. The music however transcends physical limitations. Both fall in love with each other.

One day during lesson, the curtain burns and they see each other and get each other’s glimpse. Princess looses her heart and expresses her tender feelings of love through  this song…..

(She is prepared to r enunciate the material pleasures of the royalty and assume the simple devoted life of a Jogan for the sake of his love. His music had won her heart. When she is entering the land of youth, he has become the pupil of her eyes and very close to her heart. She wants to worship and adore him. leaving the lofty heights of palace, she wants to come to him and beg for his love)

Shakeel’s lyrics is simple yet dripping with affection and devotion of a woman deeply immersed in her love and ready to brave the simple and hard life, relishing the the pleasure of her beloved’s affectionate company. Naushad’s music is captivating. And Lata as always in Naushad’s music is simply awesome, bringing forth faithfulness and loyalty of true love, with her honey dripping sweet voice.
