Jogiya Se Preet Kiye Dukh Hoy

Jogiya Se Preet Kiye Dukh Hoy- Lata Mangeshkar- Film Garam Coat 1955- Lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri- Music Pt. Amarnath.

Garam Coat was a heart wrenching tale about how the poverty affects the human relationship in a law abiding middle class family trying to meet the both ends with difficulty.  Girdhari (Balraj Sahni), is an honest in a post office at a small village. He lives with his wife , Geeta (Nirupa Roy), two daughters and a son. The meager salary of Giridhari is not sufficient to meet both ends.

Once  on duty, Giridhari forgets to collect money from an irate customer, but eventually manages to recover it by paying the guy a visit after being severely reprimanded for his behaviour and returns home with his salary slickly avoiding co-workers, Sher Khan (Jayant) and Munnilal (Rashid Khan) with whom he had planned a drinking bout.

While trying to buy gifts for the family he once again manages to lose the 100-rupee note and that sets in motion a series of predictable events: the house rent, the electricity bills, insurance, and other deliverable. All the problems are around the corner, and there is no money. Devastated and despondent Giridhari tries to commit suicide in vain, rescued by his friends and returns home to his caring and affectionate wife.

He however is unable to pay domestic bills. This coupled with borrowing and additional part time job creates mental pressure at work. The critical financial situation compels him to pocket a left over money of a customer. His dishonest actions cast aspersions even among his friend. The guilt conscience however is pricking him. He returns the money to the customer who testifies in his favour ,saving Giridhari's job.

Meanwhile Geeta takes to a part time job quietly. One day tired and frustrated Giridhari returns home one night to find the kitchen stacked with grocery. One evening he finds the door locked, his wife missing, and his children playing outside. He doubts that she has taken to prostitution. In an uncontrollable rage, he tries to strangle her and then rushes to Railway Station to commit suicide. His friends again rescue him and bring back to home.

Ultimately, he finds the missing 100-rupee note in the lining of his coat's pocket. Geeta gives it to his friends and requests them to buy a new coat. The old coat being  the root cause of all the difficulties and tough times and symbol of poverty.

The title of original story of Rajinder Singh Bedi, on which the film is based was " The Hundred Rupee Note", but later on changed to Garam Coat because of repeated references to torn winter coat.
