Hero, a spoilt son of a wealthy businessman, heroine,  with bleeding heart due to unfulfilled love affair with the hero, an orphan child in search of parents and a destitute who wants to enforce the orphan child on anyone who he feels suitable and kind enough to accept the child. Ashik Kumar and Meena Kumari in lead roles.....Sure shot recipe of a tragedy  film, isn't it. But lo behold !! On the contrary, the film turns out to be hilarious and full of comedy scenes.

In short the story is like this....

Mahendra (Nazeer Hussain), is raising an orphan child Tomato (Daisy Irani), but is worried about the child's future as his days are numbered, due to terminal illness. In order to search for kind hearted couple, who can raise the child with proper care, he comes to a park with the child. He selects Kamal (Ashok Kumar), who is spoilt son of a rich businessman indulging in alcohol consumption and womanizing. 

However Kamal is not a spoilt womanizer by birth. In earlier days he loves Usha (Meena Kumari). Their love affair is not looked upon kindly by Kamal's father. He opposes the marriage. Rather than elope with Kamal, the principled Usha prefers to remain unmarried. The unsuccessful love devastates Kamal, who promptly turns to alcohol and girls.

Coming back to Tomato, Mahendra quietly leaves Tomato with Kamal, and vanishes. Tomato attaches with Kamal like a leech. All the Kamal's efforts to shake him off become unsuccessful. In the process many hilarious situations. 

The hapless Kamal then decides to ditch the child on Usha. The child feels Usha motherly . Usha after initial resistance begins to love the innocent child. An affectionate bond develops between them. Outside, the neighbors suspect that Tomato is a illicit child of Kamal and Usha. Their caustic remarks hurt her. In the end , the child becomes instrumental in reuniting the two love birds. This song comes when their marriage is broken , Usha is devastated. The fond memories of kamal haunt her and make her life miserable and melancholic. She expresses her feelings of desolateness by this song:
