Mehfil Me Jal Uthi Shama Parwaneke Liye

Mehfilmein Jal Uthi Shama-Lata Mangeshkar-Film Nirala 1950- Lyricist P.L.Santoshi-Music C.Ramchandra

When we think of film Nirala, which was released in 1950, the first and foremost song that comes to mind is "Mehfilmein Jal Uthi Shama ,Parwaneke Liye". The lyrics of a song plays a governing role in the success of a song. It is more important than how it is sung and how it is composed. If there is no substance in the lyrics, all the efforts of singer and composer goes in vain.

This song is noteworthy bacause of lyrics of profound meaning, rendering and the composition. All the three factors have superbly blending and complementing each other to create an immortal melody transcending generations. The lyricist of the song, P.L.Santoshi was present at the time of recording along with Producer J.P.Tiwari. After the recording, J.P.Tiwari was so overwhelmed by the lyrics that he presented P.L.Santoshi five diamond buttons of his shirt. Such is the magic of lyrics.!!

Nirala is  a tale of love, between a Doctor and a Village girl. After studying abroad for several years, a young doctor (Dev Anand) returns home to inherit ownership of a rural village. En route to the village, he encounters a girl (Madhubala), whose mother needs treatment. He secures lodgings in their house. A romance blossoms but the girl's impecunious gambler of a brother marries her off to King Sangram and the couple are parted. When the new Queen falls ill, the doctor is called and their lives are imperiled by the King's suspicious sister, leading to a melodramatic denouement.

This song, picturised on Madhubala, brings forth the agony of a love lorn lady, who feels that their love is destined for oblivion. She is anguished over the unsuccessful love. She feels that the fate of any true love is it's unavoidable and premature death, fully engrossed in the tears.

What a lyrics...Truly a precious Gem....Not an iota of doubt about the sublimity of this immortal song....

Lyrics of the Song:
