Film Dastan , which was released in 1950, was based on the storyline of film "enchantment" and had Raj Kapoor and Suraiyya in lead roles.Both had come together in film Hamari Baat 1943, however their roles were small and unimportant. Raj Kapoor's role was that of a peun ,whereas Suraiyya's was a minor side role. Later both actors gained popularity and created their own niche in the Bollywood. "Dastan" is the only movie in which all Nine songs were given to Suraiyya in Naushad's music direction. also "Dastan" is the first film wherein the hero dances with heroine. Of the nine songs that Suraiyya sang in this film ,six were solos and three were duets with Rafi. The song " Tara Ri Yara Ri" is the first song in the Bollywood having Waltz Beats. Waltz is a dance in triple time, performed by a couple, who perpetually turn rhythmically round and round as they progress around the dance floor.

Another notable thing of this film is, Actress Shakeela's introduction to film world as a child actress. actress Veena, who acted in lead roles till this time,started her career as a character artist from this film.She was seen in sister's role. In the film, her brother's role was given to her husband Al Naseer.

Dastan was a runaway commercial hit. Suraiyya's acting clearly overshadowed that of Raj Kapoor.
