Aaj Mere Nasib Ne Muzko Rula Rula Diya

Aaj Mere Nasib Ne Muzko Rula Rula Diya-Lata Mangeshkar-Film Hulchul 1951-Lyricist Khumar Barabanki-Music Sajjad Hussain.

Some movies are born unlucky. They face umpteen difficulties and obstacles to get completed. Hulchul released at last in 1951 was such a film. K.Asif produced four movies, "Phool 1945", "Hulchul 1951","Mughal-E-Azam 1960" and "Love & God 1986". All films took lot of time for release. Whereas "Mughale-E-Azam" took more than Ten years to complete, "Love & God" also took 23 years to complete. This was because of frequent changes in casting, changes in music composers, technical difficulties and K.Asif's passion for perfection in picturization of shots. While reason for delay of release of "Mughal-E-Azams are well known and legendary, "Hulchul" also faced lot of hurdles and obstacles.

Initially Sajjad Hussai was assigned the task of composing the music for "Hulchul". Noticing his success of imparting quality music to film "Dost 1944" and film "1857", K.Asif was very much impressed with the prowess of Sajjad Hussain as composer. All the songs of Noor Jehan in film "Dost" were raging hit, especially "Badnam Mohabbat Kaun Kare"by Noor Jehan is still remembered by the choosy listeners.

Sajjad Hussain composed three songs in "Hulchul" , "Aaj Mere Nasib Ne Muzko Rula Rula Diya" (Lata), "Ek Zootisi Tasalli" (Lata)and "Koi Kis Tarah Raaze Ulfat"(Rajkumari). Then he had altercation with K.Asif, who suggested some amendments in his tunes. Sajjad was uncompromising and had ego like a inflated balloon. He felt insulted by  K.Asif's intervention in his work. Therefore he quit the film.

Then there was quarrel between Nargis and Dilip Kumar while filming a shot. Dilip Kumar suggested Nargis improvements regarding essaying her dialogs. Furious Nargis was on the verge of quitting film, but K.Asif's intervention stalled her, but she vowed not to work with Dilip Kumar in future.

With Nargis, Dilip had 5 hits like Mela (1948),Andaz (1949),Jogan (1950),Babul (1950),Deedar (1951) and 2 flops like Anokha Pyar (1948),Hulchul (1951). Hulchul proved to be their last film, thanks to Dilip's poking his nose in other's work.

Sajjad place was taken by another gifted composer Mohammad Shafi, who then used to work as an assistant to composer Naushad. He composed remaining songs of the film. However the credit should be given to Shafi, for not to disturb the overall balance beteen Sajjad's songs and his songs. He took utmost care to see that his songs are musically in harmony and sync with Sajjad's songs. The songs"Loota Dil Mera Hay Aabad Ho Kar","Preet Jatake Meet Banake" and Hay sadke Balam" very well resemble the Sajjad's way of composing. The resemblance makes it difficult to guess who composed which songs. Only knowledgeable listeners can differentiate.

Above composition of Sajjad is amazingly simple, sublime and yet difficult to render as was the case of all Sajjad Hussain's songs. This song is such a difficult one to sing ,especially in 2.45 minutes. No wonder Lata was put to test. Lata's  gifted voice really enhances the beauty of the brilliantly crafted words and melodious compositions!she was a boon for every talented composer as she can sing anything so that the music directors could take the liberty to let their minds take wings to compose the toughest  tunes, which perhaps they could not sing themselves. Sajjad hussain has a special magical technique of composing beautifully and bringing out lata's exceptional talent to the fore. Khumar Barabanki's profound lyrics adds to the beauty of the song. Listen to these lines "Laaun Kahaan Se Mein Wo Dil, Un Ko Jo Pyar Kar Sake; Jis Mein Base Huve The Wo Mein Ne Wo Dil Ganwa Diya'; How overwhelmed by grief are these lyrics by KB! And look how Lata sings this song of genius Sajjad; her voice echoing with despair and agony and gloom; matchless MD and matchless singer! Nargis had the art of expressing melancholic emotions to perfection; here she acts superbly in the midst of sighs and cries and shrieks of lamentation.

Lyrics of the Song:
