Loota Dil Mera Hay Aabad Ho Kar

Loota Dil Mera Hay Aabad Ho Kar- Lata Mangeshkar-Film Hulchul 1951-Lyricist Khumar Barabanki-Music Mohammad Shafi

Film "Hulchul", released in 1951, was loosely based on Hollywood movie "Wuthring Heights".The 1951 appears to be an adaptation of Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights". This was one of the three times Dilip Kumar played Heathcliff-like characters, the other two being "Arzoo" (1950) and "Dil Diya Dard Liya" (1966).

The story of the film goes like this....

On the day of wedding, the life of a jailor (Balraj sahani), was saved by a prison inmate, Kishor (Dilip Kumar). The details of tragic events in the life of unfortunate Kishor, unfold through flashback, when Kishor recounts his story to other inmates. Balraj Sahni looks so pinched and thin! Ironically enough, he was living in jail when he shot for this film, because of his affiliation with communism. He mentions in his biography that he'd come to sets escorted by a prison guard.

He spent his childhood amidst the family of a wealthy thakur (landowner) and was treated like a son. But when the thakur died his jealous son (K.N.Singh)relegated Kishore to the status of a servant. Kishore's romance with Asha (Nargis), the young thakur's sister, earns him a beating. Rather than besmirch the family's honour by eloping, he agrees to leave on condition that he may return when he has become worthy of Asha's hand. He finds a job as a carnival daredevil, diving in flames from a high platform into a tank of fire.

Lady owner of carnival, Neelam (Sitara Devi),however is very possessive about what she wants, eccentric and paragon of mental instability. She develops an affection towards Kishor, tells her feeling to Kishor with no holds bar. This does not go well with Pawl (Jeevan),who is rather interested in her. He decides to refuse to work for her (his job is climbing a long ladder, setting himself on fire and jumping into a tub of water covered in burning oil) which would land her in trouble with the public, but Kishor decides to take the job.

Kishor tells Neelam that she has no place in his life and his heart is elsewhere. In a rage, Neelam orders Pawl to kill Kishor, however as fight commences she repents her decision, and sacrifices her life, saving Kishor. Kishor ends up in jail for allegedly murdering Neelam.

Meanwhile after a prolonged wait, Asha gets married with jailor, who turns out to be Balraj Sahani. When Kishor comes to know this, he is devastated and ends his life.

Here in this song Asha (Nargis) is engrossed in lamenting mood, when Kishor gets separated from her, when he departs for city to earn living. She is totally lost in melancholic mood. Amidst sobs, she pours out the emotions of despair and desolateness tormenting her mind, full of grief. She does not have any companion besides her beloved one and his absence is intolerable. All the joyous moments of her life had turned into despair and agony. The cruel zamana however is unaware of her pangs of separation.

Lata's velvety soft voice, KB's deeply meaningful lyrics and Mohammad Shafi's divine tune brings out the forlorn mood of a dejected lover effectively. All in all, a song not to be forgotten in any case. It lingers in the mind long after it ends.

Composer Mohammad Shafi has managed to keep his music in tune with Sajjad's Hussain, which is not so easy, considering Sajjad's style of composition.

Lyrics of the Song:

Another sad solo song by Lata, which was composed by Sajjad Hussain for this film is.....

Ek Zootisi Tasalli.....

And this naughty and playful song by Lata....(When Neelam (Sitara Devi) tries to woe and seduct Kishor (Dilip Kumar)
