Bahe Akhiyonke Dhar.....

Bahe Akhiyonke Dhar- Lata Mangeshkar-Film Humlog 1951-Lyricist Uddhav Kumar-Music Roshan lal Nagrath

Like film "Malhaar", Humlog was also a movie having musical gems composed by Roshan. The music of his earlier films like "Neki Aur Badi" and "Bavre Nain" did not have Lata's voice. But his music in "Malhaar" and "Humlog" which were released in 1951, did have Lata's voice. This signaled the beginning of Lata's voice in Roshan's music. The association later on flourished to produce many immortal musical melodies.

In most of the old Hindi films of the Black & White era, there was a lot of tear-shedding because the stories of these films often revolved round people living in dismal poverty. From the early 1950s to mid-1960s, it was the age of tear-jerking family melodramas. The protagonists of these films would be poor marginal farmers, or ill-paid clerks, or daily-wagers, or rickshaw-pullers, and so on. Some well-known films of that period were “Do Bigha Zameen”(1953), “Naukri” (1954), “Boot Polish” (1954), “Garam Coat” (1955), “Mother India”(1957), and “Ab Dilli Door Nahin”(1957).

The dawn of independence in India was naturally hailed by the Indian masses with great hopes, even though the partition of the country had brought untold suffering to millions of people who were uprooted from their homes. But, reposing their faith in their leaders, people in India looked forward to all-round progress and development of the country and banishment of poverty, backwardness, and illiteracy from this land. Content-wise, our films started gradually undergoing a change after Independence. But India was still abysmally poor. Humlog , which effectively reflects that period, was also essentially a film about impoverished family which gets trapped into the vortex of financial troubles when the main member of the family goes to jail. Chandulal Shaha was the producer of this film.

During the struggling period of Lata, Composer Khemchandra Prakash came to Ranjit Studio along with lata to introduce her to Chandulal Shaha and request him to give her break as play back singer in his upcoming film. However Chandulal Shaha did not approve her voice. He felt that it is too thin and delicate and tender. The period of early fifties was dominated by strong and thick voiced female play back singers like Ameerbai Karnataki, Zohra ambalewali ans Shamshad Begum. Hence he felt that Lata's voice cannot compete with their voices, being too soft.

When Khemchandra Prakash stated that Lata's voice as divine voice, Chandulal Shaha arrogantly told him that he was capable of developing hundreds of such voices and composers like Prakash daily. Prakash could not digest the insult and resigned from Ranjit Studio. While quitting the job, he confidently told Shaha that although the later ridiculed Lata's voice, a day will come when he has to fall at her feet.

Khemchandra Prakash was not alive to see his prophesy come true. Ranjit Studio was witnessing a decline in 1951, when film Humlog was being produced. He had to persuade Lata for play back singing for the film "Humlog". Lata also sang for his film putting behind the bad memories. The song " Gaye Chala Jaa, Ek Din Tera Bhi zamana Aayega", sung by Lata with G.M.Durani,emphasizes Lata's victory and defeat of Chandulal Shaha. Period.......

Lyrics of the song:
