Fil Baadal , which was released in 1951, was a film produced by Varma Films. Varma Films had earlier produced Films like "Patanga" and "Sagai", for which music was composed by C.Ramchandra. However, Baadal was the first film under Varma Films Banner, for which Shankar Jaikishan composed music. This association of SJ with Varma Films continued right up to film " Baghi Sipahi 1958". This association created many musical gems, which continue to enthrall the listeners till date.

Baadal was essentially a costume film with medieval setting. It was indianised version of Robin Hood. The plot of the film runs like this...

A reigning King of a kingdom is away, leaving the administration of the kingdom to his Jahigardar and his henchmen.The evil Jahagirdar oppresses the villagers and farmers with heavy taxes and punishing those who are unable to pay the heavy taxes. Baadal (Premnath) is one of the villager who has courage to stand up against the oppressive Jahagirdar and his evil henchman. After his father is killed, Baadal inspires villagers to form a band of bandits, who stole from rich and distribute the wealth to poor. Vivacious and very young Madhubala plays Jahagirdar's daughter (Ratna) who falls in love with rebellious Baadal. Their romance flourishes. ( In-fact in real life also, the romance between Premnath and Madhubala was beginning to take form at this time). The chemistry between them , therefore is very much palpable.Poornima who looks equally beautiful as Madhubala plays the role of a village girl who is hopelessly in love of Baadal.

Perhaps, it was this movie that set the trends of disguises, whereby a thin mustache of Baadal would be enough to fool all other characters in the movie, but even the dummies among the audience will be in the know. Later this kind of disguise became the norm in Bollywood.
