Achha Hota Jo Dilmein Tu Aaya na Hota...

Achha Hota Jo Dilmein Tu aaya Na Hota- Lata Mangeshkar-Film Naadan 1951- Lyricist P.L.Santoshi- Music C.Ramchandra.

When one thinks about C.Ramchandra's music, one cannot ignore the important role of Lata's voice in his music. In fact, his music is incomplete without Lata's voice. Her voice was an important factor for making his music classic. Arranger Chic Chocolate played the same role in CR's music, as that of Lata's voice. Chic Chocolate was an integral part of composer C. Ramchandra's team. Ramachandra is popularly credited with introducing swing into Bollywood with tunes such as "Gore Gore O Banke Chore" from film "Samadhi 1950" and "Shola Jo Bhadke" from film "Albela 1951". However the credit for these songs should go to Chic Chocolate. The Govanese falvour one often come across in CR's light, peppy songs, was imparted by Chic.Chocolate.

Chic Chocolate, born Antonio Xavier Vaz in 1916 in Goa, was a multi-faceted and popular musician in Bombay. He played the trumpet, fronted a jazz band in Bombay's prestigious Tajmahal Hotel. His Jazz group was called "Chic and the Music Makers". Times newspaper rated the band group as "Bombay's topflight Band".

Like many Goan musicians of that time, Chic Chocolate played Jazz live at night, but his daytime was spent recording and arranging sound tracks for the movies. In this capacity, Chic Chocolate assisted Bollywood music directors like C Ramchandra and Madan Mohan, and even composed music for three Hindi films – Nadan (1951), Rangeeli (1952) and Kar Bhala (1956).

Since he was working under CR, his music in the above films is heavily influenced by CR's style of composing music. C.Ramchandra himself motivated Chic Chocolate to compose music music for the films albeit under his supervision. The albums "Nadan", "Rangeeli" and "Kar Bhala", had Chic Chocolate going out of what must have been his comfort zone – jazz music. A key reason for his delivering a competent film albums was the fact that he had the help of C Ramchandra. Perhaps because of his stature in the film industry, C Ramchandra was credited as a music supervisor (Sangeet Nireekshak), on the record.

Like Chic Chocolate, Ravi, Kalyanji Anandji, N.Dutta and Laxmikant Pyarelal also worked initially as arrangers. However, they managed to come out of influence of the music Directors , under whom they worked and established themselves as independent music composers, developing their unique style and talent. Chic Chocolate, however was unfortunate in this aspect. His music in film Naadan 1951, Rangeeli 1952 and Kar Bhala 1956, so resembled with CR's music, that many listeners credited it to C.Ramchandra.

Their collaboration in the 1952 film Rangili included the song "Koi Dard Hamara Kya Samjhe", sung by Lata Mangeshkar. He is remembered for his work with Naasir in the 1956 film "Kar Bhala".

Chic’s lives as jazz man and film musician sometimes merged. He had a cameo appearance in the film "Albela", along with his band in a song sequence, dressing them in frilly Latin costumes. Chic capitalised on the film’s success by dressing his band in those costumes in future live performances.

The above song in Dev Anand-Madhubala Starrer film Naadan 1951, also has distinct style of C.Ramchandra. Nadaan had a popular track list, including songs like Talat Mahmood's "Aa Teri Tasvir Bana Lu" and Lata Mangeshkar’s "Saari Duniya Ko Piichhe Chodkar".

This sad, affectionate melody in Lata's tender voice depicts the helplessness and and miseries of a tormented heart due to unfruitful love. She complains to her beloved one, why he entered in her life, if he had to leave dejecting their love. She asks why he acquainted happiness and sparkle of laughter in her life, if ultimately he had to leave her with tears welling in her eyes. Profoundly meaningful lyrics of P.L.Santoshi, ardent rendering by Lata and marvelous tune of Chic Chocolate (!), makes this song one of the best solo song of Lata, under CR music direction.

Lyrics of the song:
