Ye Hava Ye Raat Ye Chandani...

Ye Hawa Ye Raat Ye Chandani-Talat Mahamood- Film Sangdil 1952- Lyricist Rajendra Krishna- Music Sajjad Hussain
There are many instances where we find that plot of a Hindi Movie is inspired on English Novels or Dramas. Take for instance, Hollywood popular movie Roman Holiday (Chori Chori, Dil Hai Ki Manata Nahi) , or Shakespere literature ( Hyder, Angoor, Hamlet). The movie Sangdil , released in 1952, under the production of Talwar Films, is fairly faithful adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre" novel, published in 1847. It was a movie full of Romance, separation,  and suspense.

The plot of the film runs like this....
Shankar's father is a wealthy man and Kamala is is his best friend's daughter. While dying, the friend had requested Shankar's father to take custody of Kamala and her inheritance. Kamala is badly treated by Shankar's mother. However she has friends as well, Shankar and Dayi Maa. (Leela Chitnis). Shankar's father at the time of dying, extorts from Shankar  an assurance that he will take care of Kamala. A few days later, Shankar's mother sends for a man for taking Kamala away to an ashram, but Kamala escapes and lands up in a religious community and becomes Jogan. Years later Kamala grows into a jogan (Madhubala). One day they visit a country mansion to perform pooja in Harvest celebration Fest.
On the other side, shankar grows up to become young Thakur (Dilip Kumar) living in the lavish country mansion, where Kamala is scheduled to visit.. He is flirting with Mohini (Shammi), but has not forgotten his childhood sweetheart. What happens to the love nestling in the hearts of Shankar and kamala ? Do they unite ? Better to see movie for that. However at this jucture, Shankar , the young Thakur is flattering Mohini , telling how beautiful she is, and she also enjoys his complements. This song comes in the film at this juncture. While Mohini is playing Sitar,  the Thakur praises her beauty.

He says that the calm and serene night, with cool pleasant breeze and distant twinkling stars, in fact all the natural beauty pales into insignificance when compared to her beautiful persona. Therefore there is no reason, why he should not aspire for her love and affection. He says that she does not have idea how her eyes captivate him. When they are compassionate and kindly they herald tranquility and peace, but when they are malevolent, they signal  impending calamity.  He says that her every word and act is intoxicating and exhilarating. Her benevolent stare makes the flowers blossom. Her beauty is so invogorating, then why he should not dream for her love ?

"Mujhe kyun na ho teri aarzoo, teri justju mein bahaar hai..",
"Jo ghazab mein aaye to qeher hai, jo ho meherbaan to qaraar hai.."

What a great start to this song with the sitar in the prelude... wonderful interludes as well. No doubt, Sajjad Hussain for its magical composition and Talat Mahmood for its outstanding rendition deserve all the accolades for this TM-classic that has kept millions of listeners captivated by its beauty for decades, a song that is considered to be one of the best TM-songs. However, Rajendra Krishan's contribution for such poetic lyrics in this beautiful serenade should not be forgotten. What a fine poet he was,  to pen such a beautiful , profound meaning lyrics. This is one of the master piece from the arsenal of composer Sajjad Hussain. An all time classic song.

In his earlier days of career, Talat Mahamood was Dilip Kumar's regular voice. It was then replaced by Mohammad Rafi. After films Aan and Daag, Sangdil was Dilip Kumar's third successive hit in 1952. From here he did not look back. He achieved super stardom and ruled the Hindi Film Industry for next 50 years
