Teer Khate Jayenge

Teer Khate Jayenge- Lata Mangeshkar-Film Deewana 1952- Lyricist Shakeel Badayuni-Music Naushad

Suraiyya was the the last bastion of the creed Actress -Singer after the advent of phenomenon Lata Mangeshkar. As a heroine she sang first time under Naushad's baton in film Anmol Ghadi, released in 1946. After that she continued to sing under Naushad's music in films like "Dard", "Natak","Dillagi","Dastan" and finally in film Deewana in 1952. Whereas other music composers like Husnalal Bhagatram (Badi Bahen, Naach,Sanam),Anil Biswas ( Gajre,Preet, Do Sitarein) and eminent composers like Ghulam Mohammad as well as Hansraj Behl(Rajput), could not keep away Lata's voice from films starring Suraiyya, Naushad clearly kept Lata's voice away from Suraiyya's films.

Deewana, released in 1952, was however an exception to this. Here in this film he used Lata's voice in two songs...

1. Mere Chand Tere Lala...
2. Teer Khate Jayenge.

Deewana was a movie with tragic end , the story of which runs like this....

A young prince Ashok (Suresh), has chance encounter with a nomadic girl Laali (Suraiyya) in a forest while hunting. Both fall in love. However Fulwa (Madan Puri), a nomad in Kabila, who is desirous of marrying Laali, sees them and complaints to nomadic community head that Laali had lost her virginity and he has punushed Ashok by knocking him off. The head believes this and orders robbing of Royal coffer as revenge.

In the meanwhile, Ashik and Laali marry each other and come to community head for his blessings. Feeling that class distinction will be an obstacle for their marriage, the head asks Ashik to get queen's ascent to the marriage. Ashok returns to Kingdom for getting Queen's approval.

After Ashok leaves, the head orders his Carvan to march ahead, leaving berieving Laali behind. Ashok ,learning the opposition from Queen to his marriage, decides to renunciate the kingdom comes back to waiting Laali. They both join the Caravan. The jealous Fulwa tries to get rid of Ashok by giving poison in water. He falls sick. Laali cannot comrehend the reasion for his ill heaalth. The Queens in search of prince spot him with caravan, and accuse Laali for poisoning him, and take him back to Kingdom.

Ashok reluctantly gets married to Mangala Sumitra Devi), the beautiful princess of Thakur Amar Singh. Mangala comes to know that Ashok is already married to Lali. She feels cheated, but compelled to stay with him.

Here in forest, Laali gives birth to a boy (Ratan), whose actual father is Ashok. Ratan saves his father's life. The King's men bring ratan to Palce. Thankful that Ratan had saved her husband's life, Mangala employs him and actually gets too fond of him.

Once while transfering Royal coffer, ratan has fatal accident and dies. Before dying he informs Ashok that he is actually his son and dispells the mis conception that Laali gave him poison.

Ashok is heartbroken again. He goes to Lali with the corpse of Ratan and they lament together on the death of their son. After the corpse of their son is cremated, Ashok returns to his palace with Lali on his side. At the door he meets an enraged Mangala with a sword in her hand. She argues that Ashok will have to leave Lali behind if he wants to stay in his palace, because Lali does not belong to the standard to stay there. Ashok counter-argues that as long as everything is his property he has the complete right to decide who will stay in his palace. Lali cannot stand this disquietude anymore. She leaves without uttering a single word and Ashok follows her.

This song comes when Mangala learns about Ashok's marriage with Laali. She is devastated. Her whole world crumbles arround her. She feels dejected. She is unable to digest his betrayal and in the state of melancholy sings this song to express the inner feelings of turmoil.

She says that it is written in her destiny to get repeated betrayed and yet she has no qualms to try for better destiny next time. She will keep on washing the pains of dejection in her welling tears.

She assures her beloved that even though he has given her grief stricken bleeding heart, she has no complaints. The will keep enduring the the immense sorrow he has endowed on her.

However she also tries to tell him  that her shedding tears will not be in vain. He will also have to suffer the similar agonies like her. She will reside in his heart permanently as a rememberance of his unjustifiable injustice and keep tormenting him throughout his life. He cannot run away from this anguish.

The words of Shakkel are so powerful that they accurately depict the state of desolateness and agony arising out of betrayal. The feelings are so severe that she does not hesitate to curse him for his sinful act. The ardent rendering by Lata and out of world tune of Naushad maked this song heart wrencing. A pearl from Naushad's stock that has all hallmarks of an immortal and unforgettable song.

The tight story, the stellar performance by all actors and wonderful music of Naushad made this movie successful and Silver Jubuilee Hit.

While there are other songs sung by Suraiyya, this song is the real winner and film Deewana will be remembered solely for this song....

While appreciating the beauty of this song, one cannot ignore another the sole song by Rafi in this film, "Tasveer Banata Hoon, Teri Khoon Jigar Se". another Gem from Naushad, this song also is treat to ears.
