Ae Dard E Jigar Mere dard E Jigar....

Ae Dard E Jigar- Lata Mangeshkar- Film Parchhain 1952- Lyricist Noor Lucknowi- Music C.Ramchandra

Parchhain which was released in 1952, was a film produced and directed by eminent producer Director V.Shantaram under the banner of Rajakamal Productions. The lead pair was V.Shantaram himself and his wife Jayashree. Jayashree although used to sing her songs on screen in many Marathi and Hindi films, this film was exception. Originally, composer Vasant Desai was to give music to the film. But due to some disputes, he left Rajkamal Studio, and in his place came a gifted composer C.Ramchandra, who , by that time, had gained fame for his quality music appealing to all kind of listners. His music was popular in both classes and masses.

However, C.Ramchandra was determined to give all female songs to Lata Mangeshkar, as he felt that Jayashree style singing has become irrelevant due to change in viewer's taste. Therefore he was ready to give music only on one condition... All onscreen female songs should go to Lata. V.Shantaram had to agree, as he wanted to encash C.Ramchandra's reputation for the success of his film. This was the end of Jayashree carrer as singer, and after this, she never sang in any film.

Thus, in the end, music of Parchhain was totally dominated by Lata's voice. She sang total 8 songs out of which 5 were solos and three duets with Talat Mahmood.Out of 5 solos of Lata, 3 were sand songs while remaining two were in happy mood.

1) Aye Dar E Jigar, Mere dard E Jigar (Sad)
2) Katate Hai Dukhmein ye Din (Sad)
3) Doob Jaye Jo Kismat Ka Taara (Sad)
4) Chanda Ki Chaomein Thandi Thandi Havaomein (Happy)
5) Naina Lagake Sukh Le Gayo Pardesi Saiyyan (Happy)

The story of the film goes like this....

Tired of his life Deepak (V. Shantaram), tries to commit suicide. However his inner voice stops him. As he's reurning home he gets hit in the eye by a bullet, blinding him. The accident has been caused by Saloni (Jayshree), a young lady also called Chhoti Rani (Young Queen), while she's out on a hunt. She takes him home with the view of getting him treatment. While staying in the big mansion Deepak soon falls in love with Saloni, who reciprocates his feelings. However this is not liked by the older Queen, Badi Rani (Lalita Pawar) as she wants Saloni to marry Vinod. She sends Deepak for eye treatment with Kishori (Sandhya), one of the maids in the house, whose voice is similar to Saloni's voice. While Deepak undergoes treatment at far away place Saloni cannot forget him and the affectionate moments between them, when they were in each other's company. She feels utterly lonely. The separation from her beloved, creates waves of desolateness . Her grief stricken heart is wrenched by the uncontrollable spasms of anguish. This song comes in the film at this time.

(She address to her heart her sorrows and says how it can fathom the depths of her miseries and how as a result she spent the endless night in the state of tortured mind. The gloomy honey dipped dew only accompanied her, and finally, night ended amid the peeled petals of blossom representing her dashed hopes of his return.

However, a faint glimmer of hope still resides in her dark mind...A hope that he will come back and these fateful days will go away. Till that time, she is left with no other option than to wait for him. The end seem nowhere nearby, therefore she is resigned to her destiny and wait forever.....)

C.Ramchandra and Madan Mohan especially were two composers, who fully harnessed Lata's tender and mellow voice to bring forth the melancholic mood in sad songs. In this song also, Lata's soft and affectionate voice effectively conveys the sorry state of Saloni and pangs of separation tormenting her mind. Noor Lucknowi's lyrics and C.ramchandra's tune are out of this world. All these things makes this song unforgettable.

There is another sad song by Lata "Katate Hai Dukhmein Ye din" in the film which comes in similar situation, when Saloni feels loneliness in absence of Deepak. This song also has all the hallmarks of C.Ramchandra's music combined with Lata's divine voice. (Jayashree's overacting however, mars the beauty of song to some extent). Here is the immortal song, the magic of which is still felt even after 3-4 generations. It may be counted among All Time Classic of CR-Lata combo song. The listner cannot help getting immersed in the melancholic mood in awe. What a heavenly melody. Here is the song....
