Wo Raat Din Wo Shaam Ki

Wo Raat Din Wo Shaa Ki- Lata mangeshkar-Film Saiyan 1951- Lyricist D.N.Madhok- Music Sajjad Hussain.

Saiyan (Beloved) is a 1951 Bollywood film-Hindi romantic drama directed by M. Sadiq for his Sadiq Productions Ltd. This was a period film in feudal India, and a  unusual, tragic saga of star-crossed lovers and a family caught in the calamitous backwash of a forsaken romance. An orphaned village girl Saiyan (Madhubala)is given shelter in a respected home and wooed by the two sons vijay and Rajju ( played by ajit and Sajjan respectively) of the family.

The younger brother being headstrong and impulsive this triangular relationship leads to inevitable disaster that ruins them as well as their family. Thus Saiyan was a tragedy film. The plot was straightly taken from 1946 American Western "Duel in the Sun"

The story and screenplay of the film were written by Azmi Bazidpuri. The music was composed by Sajjad Hussain, with lyrics written by D. N. Madhok, Rajendra Krishan and Hasrat Jaipuri.

Sajjad Hussain being somewhat headstrong composer, did not get well enough with many producers. As a result, he used to quit the project mid way. Take the case of film Hulchul for instant. Sajjad had altercations with producer K.Asif. Every producer has certain expectations and notions about the music of his film. During the rehersal of recording of Hulchul songs, K.Asif advised some changes in the music. The headstrong Sajjad took this as an uninvited nose poking by K. Asif. In the heat of rage, he quit the project after composing three songs. (Other songs were composed by Mohammad Shafi).

In the same year, Sajjad composed music for Saiyan. Since Lata's voice was used for only two songs of Sajjad in Hulchul, it was not fully harnessed. However in saiyan, Sajjad utilised Lata's tender voice to it's full potential.Sajjad gave six songs to Lata in this film:

1.Hawa Pe Dil Dole
2.Khayalonmein Tum Ho
3.Kismatmein Khushi Ka Naam Nahi
4.Kali Kali raat Ye Dil Bada sataye
5.Wo Raat Din Wo Shaam Ki Gujri Hui Kahaniyan
6.Tum Dil De Diya

The song "Tumhe Dil De Diya", however was not used in the film. All these songs has distinct Sajjad Hussain stamp on them. The tunes were not easy to hum, but their sweetness was unparalleled. Add to that the ethereal beauty of Madhubala on screen and Lata's honey dipped voice, and the resultant product is toxic.

This song starts with violin interlude and gradually blossoms into a wonderful rendition ,well complimented by in between aalaps and chorus . It ends in very soft manner amid violins . Saiyan, as a film is long forgotten, but when it comes to quality music,  it is still itched into listner's minds. Therefore, this film will be remembered for it's songs, rather than the film itself.

Lyrics of the Song:

वो रात दिन वो श्याम की गुज़री हुई कहानियाँ जो तेरे घर में छोड़ दी प्यार की सब निशानियाँ वो रात दिन .... सब्र-ओ-क़रार छिन गया, घर था सो वो भी लुट गया याद रहेंगी उम्र भर आप की महर्बानियाँ वो रात दिन्...... आये भी और चले गये दिन मेरे बहार के अब है ख़िज़ा की गोद में रोती हुई जवानियाँ वो रात दिन.........
