Dur Koi Gaaye, Dhun Ye Sunaye

Dur Koi Gaye -Shamshad Begum and Lata Mangeshkar- Film Baiju Bawra 1952-Lyricist Shakeel Badayuni-Music Naushad.

The songs of some movies are memorable, but the music of some movies is so outstanding that it stands apart from the other compositions and makes the film also immortal by the virtue of it's quality. Baiju Bawra, the film reased in 1952, by Prakash Pictures was such a film. The movies "Premnagar" and "Station Master" ,by Prakash Pictures helped Naushad to make him a successful composer.

This was the time, when composers were getting their due and fame. The films were sold on their names. By 1952, Naushad was an established name in Hindi Film music due to successful music in films like Ratan, Anmol Ghadi, Shahjehan and Deedar. On the other hand, Prakash Pictures was in finanancial crisis. The owner of Prakash Pictures ,Vijay Bhatt and Shankar Bhatt, badly wanted a hit to overcome this crisis, therefore they approached Naushad for composing music for their incomming movie "Baiju Bawra". However the exorbitant fees Naushad commanded at that time was out of their reach. Upon their requests, Naushad agreed to accept the project at half the usual price. Still it was more than what the lead pair of the movie got.

Baiju Bawra was a musical film, whose music was based on Indian classical music. Bhatt's  courageous decision to make a film based on classical music was met with scepticism, by the  film Industry, because of it's lack of mass appeal. However the film and it's music turned out to be overwhelming success, both qualitatively and commercially. With this, Naushad was instrumental in introducing classical component in Hindi Film Industry.

The film merges the legend of Baiju Bawra with the historic setting of Mughal Emperor Akbar's court in India. Baiju (Bhushan) is the son of a musician who also grows up to be a musician. He comes to believe that Tansen, the famed musician at the court of Akbar, is responsible for his father's death. The movie then follows Baiju's attempt to avenge his father's death by challenging Tansen to a musical duel.

All the songs in the movie became raging hit. The soundtrack consisted of songs based on Raag Puriya Dhanashree, Todi Malkauns,Darbari and Desi.

Even though there were many changes in the storyline from the original life of Baiju Bawra, the film was both a commercial and critical success and catapulted both its lead actors into stardom. Meena Kumari became the first-ever Filmfare Best Actress Award winner in 1954, the first of four Best Actress trophies she won in her career.[9] The film's music director, Naushad, also received the inaugural Filmfare Best Music Director Award for the song "Tu Ganga Ki Mauj"; this was Naushad's first and only Filmfare Award win.

In this song, Gauri's ( Meena Kumari) friends are inviting her to celebrate Basant Panchami", which heralds blossoming of flora, creating a perfect ambiance of youth dreamland and lover's paradise. Gauri, however is immensely engrossed in Baiju's (Bharat Bhushan) love. His absence makes her weary of celebration. The fond memories of their wonderful moments in company of each other, make her sad and her eyes welling up with tears. She tries to hide the emotions from her teasing and inquising friends. But the clever friends know the secret of her love and continue to tease her. Amid their teasings ,she brings out the nascent anguish of separation dwelling within her heart.

The flame of love is alight in her mind. The eyes and mind oblivious od anything but his all engulfing love. Sleepless Nights are long and whiled away by tossing , because his memories and separation torment her mind.

She can't express her feeling even to her dearest confidante friends, because disclosing  the secret would open the pandora's box and invite tongue in cheek comments from them. These comments, though plesantly tingling her mind, also pierce her bleeding heart and causing her eyes brimming of tears, shed in her lover's affectionate memories.

Both Shamshad and Lata, render the song in tandem and very well complement each other. The lyrics of Shakeel effectively brings the state of Gauri's troubled , grief striken heart, engulfed in her beloved's warm memories. Every well placed word of lyrics depicts Gauri's desolateness and her dilemma.

As for music, Naushad's composition is based on Raag Desh. The Aalaps and in between musical chorus makes this song so sweet to hear. Meena Kumari's eyes convey the stae of her tormented mind. In short, in all departments, the song ranks high, making it not easy to forget. No wonder, Naushad earned his first and only Filmfare award for the music of the film.
