Bedard Shikari Are Bedard Shikari

Bedard Shikari Are Bedard Shikari- Lata Mangeshkar & Suraiyya-Lyricist Qamar Jalalabadi- Music Husnalal Bhagatram

The departure of Noor Jehan and Khurshid to Pakistan, following the partition of India, heralded the demise of era of actress-singers. Few actress-singers like Kananbala and Shanta Apte remained in the industry, but with the advent of phenomenon Lata Mangeshkar their kind of singing had no relevance. The taste of listners dramatically changed.
However, there was one sound exception that is Suraiyya, who continued as actress-singer, even after Lata era began. She had unique voice capable of conveying the Dard and inner turmoil, hence her singing never paled before Lata's singing. That's why composer Husnalal Bhagatram duo liberally used her voice in solo songs. In film Sanam also Suraiyya had four Solos.

First time she sang with Lata Mangeshkar was in this song "Bedard Shikari Are Bedard Shikari". Both of them complemented each other wonderfully to give musical treat to viewers.

Sanam was a love story where Jogin (Dev Anand), a poor unemployed young man, comes across Sadhana (Suraiya) in a chance encounter in a book shop. Under desperate conditions, Jogin had to rob some money for his mother's treatment, but gets involved in an accidental homicide for which he is jailed by the court, where the Judge (K.N. Singh) is Sadhana's father. Sadhana is an independent-minded daughter and does not hesitate to argue with her father about social justice for the poor and underprivileged. The story takes many twists and turn with songs and a dance number. Eventually Jogin and Sadhana fall for each other, but their proposed marriage is vehemently opposed by the father of the bride. Young and fresh Meena Kumari in the early days of her career, played supportive role of Dev Anand's sister.

In this song, Both Meena kumari and Suraiyya sre apparantly forcing a bird hunter to release the captured birds because they are helpless. In fact the song is addressed to the plight of jailed Dev Anand, urging him to escape from the jail. They also help him escape at the end of the song.

This is the song which made Suraiyya realise that Lataji had a much better voice quality and much more superior as far as the knowledge of music and singing was concerned.Subsequently she started withdrawing from playback singing scene and Lataji came full force

Lyrics of the Song:
