Jagriti, a film released in 1954, was a film way ahead of it's time. Seven years had lapsed after the nation gained independence. The rot of nepotism, corruption, red-tap ism, plaguing  other aspects of life of the common man, was also slowly poisoning the educational field. In such a tumult period, it was courageous to bring out a film advocating patriotism and infusing a sense of pride in the mind of student, about the rich cultural heritage of the nation in which they live. Jagriti did exactly the same and with roaring success.

The film is a telling commentary about the  inter-personal relationship between a teacher and  students. Ajay (Rajkumar Gupta), is a spoiled and brat rich kid, hence he is sent to a boarding school as punishment. The school is run by a teacher who wants to instill a sense of good behavior and teach them their responsibilities towards their nation, bring out the feelings of patriotism and make them an ideal citizens. His teaching methods are unorthodox. Instead of in closed walls of classroom, he takes his students to different places to acquaint them of the cultural and social treasures. Meanwhile, Ajay continues to trouble others by his brat nature, including the teacher Shekhar (Abhi Bhattacharya). One day he comes across another student Shakti (Ratan Kumar), whose nature is diametrically opposite to Ajay. He is obedient and dutiful, but crippled. Shakti tries his best to mend the ways of Ajay, but in vain. One day Ajay runs from the school. In order to bring him back Shakti also goes after him. However being a crippled boy, he is unable to catch Ajay, instead looses himself in the crowd,  where he is run over by a speeding car and dies. Shakti's death devastates Ajay. A pal of guilt descends on him , that because of his stubborn nature, he has lost a best good nature friend. This moves him and he totally transforms to become a model student.

The narrative is tight and not once deviates from the story. Director Satyen Bose excels in portraying the pupil-teacher relationship. Abhi Bhattacharya as an ideal teacher , seeking to induct good values in student, really has given a stellar performance. All the songs of Jagriti had written by Kavi Pradeep and music was given by Hemant Kumar. The song sung by Kavi Pradeep himself, " Aao Bachhe Tumhe Dikhayein Zanki Hindustan KI", " Ham Laye Hai Toofan SE Kashti Nikal Ke" by Rafi and this song " Sabarmati Ke Sant Tune Kar Diya Kamal" , by Asha Bhosle, are suffused by patriotic feelings that make one's chest swell with pride. This song describes the the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi in achieving the independence by non-violent ways.
