After Samrat and Nagin, Shart was another film for which Hemant Kumar had given music. Like Nagin, the music of Shart also became famous, although like Nagin , the treatment given to story was way below professional. Lyricist S.H.Bihari had written the songs of the film. This was first time S.H.Bihari penned all the twelve songs of a film . The lead pair was Deepak,, a Bengali actor, specially summoned for the film and Shyama. Shashikala,Mohana, Neelkant Tiwari, Sulochana and I.S.Johar were in supporting roles. I.S.Jihar even contributed in story writing along with Qamar Jalalbadi and Naseer Hussain.

The story of the film was based on Alfred Hitchcock's ' The Stranger on the Train'. Normally, such a powerful star cast, story and music of Hemant Kumar's heavenly music should be a sure shot recipe of a successful film, but this was not the case for the film. The film did well below average business. The main reason was shoddy treatment given to the murder mystery plot of Hitchcock. The characters, the events, the production value which are the essential requisites of a hit film were lacking here. Nothing seemed to have a convincing illusion of realism. It is learnt that this happened because of wanton cuts by Sensors . The cuts were so severe that the story lacked continuity. Characters seemed improbable and inexplicable variations in tones of cinematography, gave the impression of unprofessional and amateurishly handled story.  Initially the film banned by Sensor, because of the theft of story. Afterwards it was released after lot of cuts. In the process the film suffered badly on many account. The result was mediocre business , despite the good music.

In fact, the music of Heman Kumar was only the redeeming factor of the film. Particularly the songs' Na Ye Chand Hoga Na tare Rahenge', Dekho Wo Chand Chhupke Karta Hai Kya Isharein''Piya Mai To Hui Bawri' and 'Chala Kafila Pyarka' were raging hit when the movie was released. The song' Na Ye Chand Hoga' comes in two versions, one sung by Hemant Kumar and other sung by Geeta Dutt. However it is Hemant Kumar's version that appeals more.
