Jadoogar Saiyya Chhodo Meri Baiyya...

Jadoogar Saiyya Chhodo Mori Baiyyan- Lata Mangeshkar- Film Nagin 1954- Lyrics Rajendra Krishna- Music Hemant Kumar
Filmistan's dance-cum-musical romance, ' Nagin', directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal, with lead pair of Pradeep Kumar and young, fresh and vivacious Vyjayantimala, was released in 1954, with fanfare, and it became an instant hit. Hemant Kumar's lilting, mellifluous music and Vyjayantimala's eloquent dance performances were the piece- de- resistance of the film.
The story is rather stale, unimaginative and uninspiring, especially coming from Filmistan Studios, who earlier gave a thought provoking film like Nastik, which won accolades from the viewers, the story is not special. It revolves around the love between the son of Nagi tribal chief, Sanatan (Pradeep Kumar) and Mala (Vyjayantimala), the daughter of Ragi tribal chief. Both tribes are at loggerheads on the issue of the sale of extracted snake poison. Santan kills a tribal man from Ragi tribe, and Mala vows to extract revenge. While she sets to avenge, she hears the been tune played by Sanatan, gets subjugated by it and begins to dance and sing. They eventually fall in love, irrespective of their tribal rivalry. The rest of the film progress showing their frequent unions and separations. Their road to love is not without thorns though. They have to confront the wrath of tribal rivalry and also of Prabeer (Jeevan), who has intention to marry with Mala. Frustrated with their love, which defies the social norms and shackles, and bound to the assurances given to Prabeer to marry off his daughter with Jeevan, the tribal Ragi Chief, arranges to send a cobra on the mission of biting Sanatan and finish him. When Mala learns this, she stands in the path of cobra, compels it to bite her and thus expend it's poison with her. As the poisoned Mala's soul  is rapidly transgressing to abode of heaven, here comes Sanatan, who plays magical been tune and succeeds bringing it back. Upon her recovery, the repenting father of Mala, unites the love birds. ....The film ends with happy note.

Nothing brilliant about the plot, however  it is music and graceful dance performances of ebullient, ravishing , effervescent Vyjayantimala, and Lata's tender, fresh songs, which carry the film on their shoulder, so that the viewer never gets bored. The songs are interspersed in regular interval and they keep viewers rooted to chair.  Lata had sung nine songs (solos and duet), and thus dominates the music department. This song " Jadoogar Saiyya, Chhodo Mori Baiyya, Ho Gayee Aadhi Raat", comes when the film progresses with the frequent clandestine meetings of Sanatan and Mala, in which they profess their love in ardent notes.

( She says that whenever she thinks of his love and the fond moments of his affection, she can't help blushing. Her eyes are brimming full with embarassment she experiences from the caustic and tongue- in- cheek remarks of her girlfriends. Time passes rapidly in his all engulfing company. The night is deep and she has to return back to her home. She however assures to comeback next evening.
She has come far away from her home only for the sake of him and his love, however she cannot stay anymore. She has to go back, because she is bound by the social norms and shackles of society's rules. )
The simple lyrics of Rajendra Krishna, effectively depicts the dilemma of an innocent, law abiding and self respecting  girl, who wants to get fully drenched in the magic of first love, yet aware of her limitations and Laxmanrekha, she is not willing to violate. Hemantda's tune is undulating and captivating. Tender looking , scintillating Vyjayantimala dances the song breezily and sets the screen aflame. In all, an audio-visual treat......
