Garam Coat, released in 1955, by Cine Corporation, was a movie based on Rajinder Singh's novel " The Clerk and the Coat". The film had Balraj Sahani and Niroopa Roy in lead role. The music was given by Pandit Amarnath. The story is about a honest post master, who is also money order cash collector. He lives with a wife Geeta (Niroopa Roy ) and two daughters. He is poor and unable meet both ends from his meager salary. One day while purchasing household groceries on salary day, he looses a 100 rupee note. He panics when his electricity bills, ration bill and other deliverable get affected. Even at his workplace , he begins to make mistakes. Finally dejected, he tries to commit suicide unsuccessfully, returns home and confides the truth to his doting wife.
His wife then decides to work part time, in order to meet the expenditures. One day on returning home from his job, he finds the kitchen of his home stacked with groceries and wife missing. When she returns he questions her about her movements, and finding some money in her hands, which she tries to hide, he assumes she has taken to prostitution. Unable to control his rage he tries to strangle her and then rushes towards the railway track onto a speeding train but is rescued by the hefty Sher Khan (Jayant), and the liliputian Munnilal (Rashid Khan) who refuse to buy the story of Geeta's infidelity and bring him back home. Ultimately, he finds the missing 100-rupee note in the lining of his coat's pocket. Geeta gives the note to Sher Khan, requesting him to buy the fabric for a new winter coat.
Deftly edited by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, “Garam Coat” was fairly competently directed by Amar Kumar. Inspite of strong story line., the film flopped miserably on Box office. Perhaps the viewers did not find any melodrama in this simple story , to keep them rooted to chairs. This Meera Bhajan however is the silver lining of the flop film, for which the avid listeners of Hindi film music will remember the film.
