Mai Garibonka dil

Y
Mai Garibon Ka Dil Hoon Watan Ki Juban- Hemant Kumar- Film Ab-E- Hayat 1955- Lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri- Music Sardar Malik.

After film " Chor Bazar", which was released in 1954, this was another film whose music was composed by Sardar Malik. Both films produced by Filmistan Studio, had strong flavour of Arabic music, which invariably has a kind of intoxicating and mystique touch, and the music of both films had this magical virtue. Out of total nine songs in " Ab-E-Hayat", five were written by Hasrat Jaipuri, two by Qamar Jalalabadi and one by Raja Mehandi Ali Khan and Kaifi Irani.
Unlike in film Chor Bazar", wherein Sardar Malik had used Lata's voice prominently, Ab E Hayat female songs were sung by Asha Bhosale and Geeta Dutt. Lata's songs in " Chor Bazar", like " Chalta Rahe Ye Karavan" and " Hui Hai Hamse Nadani" were hugely popular and were acclaimed by class and mass. However the female songs in Ab-E-Hayar did not get that much popularity.
The piece-de-resistance of the film is the above song sung by Hemant Kumar. The song initially was to be rendered by Kishor, however due to it's heavy undertone Shashadhar Mukherjee, the producer, suggested Sardar Malik to use Hemant Kumar, and Hemantda has given full justice to the song. This song was picturised on Premnath. The story of the film is fairy style, unfolding in some obscure Islamic land. Samri, an evil sardar, abducts the two princesses of Halal Kingdom. One commits suicide, while another named Rukhsana, is befriended by Samri's sister Sabz pari (Ameeta). Her furious mother turns her into Marble statue.
The story then travels to Halal kingdom. Jalal (Premnath) is robbin hood type prince caring for poor people. The third and remaining sister of Halal kingdom, Shahzad (Shashikala) is kind of Harron Al Rashid type character, wandering in her kingdom clandestinely in male robes. She visits a criminal den, and in ensuing fight gets injured, and rescued by Jalal. They instantly fall in love.
There is another twist in the tale Aquil (Pran) is a prince of neighbour kingdom, to whom Halal kingdom owes huge money. Jalal and Shahzada's love meetings re obstructed by Aquil (Pran), who tries to molest her ,Jalal rescues her again. When their clandestine meetings are discovered, furious Sultan jails Jalal. Aquil pressurises Sultan of Halal Kingdom to settle the debt or marry Shahzada to her.Sultan agrees. On the day of wedding, Samri abducts Shahzada. In the ensuing mayhem, he turns Sultan in Statue. Only thing that can turn him into human being is "Ab-E-Hayat" ( Water of life). The jailed Jalal hears about this and with royal permission, sets out to get the magical water. The remaining film is about how he gets it and also rescues Shahzada.
A typical fantasy film, interspersed with unexplained coincidences, unrealistic characters and events. Not much in the story, however the silver lining is Sardar Malik's music. This song comes in the film when Prince Jalal wanders on the roads of Halal Kingdom , proclaiming his virtues. The poor and destitute adore him all along the song.
The manly voice of Hemant Kumar is well complemented by humming and chorus. This is indeed the highlight song of the film.....
