Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya....
The popularity of Kundan Lal Saigal was at Zenith, when the Film Shahjehan was released in 1946. Naturally, to ensure the success of the film, Saigal has been awarded five songs. All these songs captivated the learned listeners and were roaring hit. Saigal has a song with Rafi in this movie " Mere Sapanon ki Rani Ruhi Ruhi".
Here it is pertinent to mention that, although all the singers like Talat Mahamood, Mukesh, Manna Dey and Kishor Kumar were ardent fans of Saigal, only Rafi had the fortune to sing with Saigal. Credit should be given to Rafi, that like Mukesh or Kishor Kumar, he did not try to imitate Saigal. Right from the first song, Rafi adhered to his distinctly unique style uninfluenced by anybody.
The song "Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya" was the highlight song of the film.Shortly after the film was released, Kundan Lal Saigal breathed his last forever.The song, therefore, has an inherent tinge of sorrow, prophesy, and harbinger of impending death. As per Saigal's last wish, this song was played during his funeral.
