After the partition of India, the eminent singer-actresses like Noor Jehan, Khurshid, Shamim migrated to Pakistan. The only actress-singer remained on the horizon was Suraiyya.

The lead role of Film "Gajre 1948' was played by Suraiyya, who was herself a accomplished singer. However , for the music score of this film, composer Anil Biswas placed emphasis on a new emerging voice of Lata Mangeshkar, whose potential was recognized by him. Therefore, in this film Lata Mangeshkar sang more songs than Suraiyya. ( Total Five against Suraiyya's Four songs). The Lata songs in the film were

Except the last song, all the songs in Lata's voice were raging hit and are unforgettable even now. Being a Maharashtrian singer, Lata's voice had unmistakable Marathi accent in her songs. It was Anil Biswas, who removed her Marathi accent , polished her Urdu accents and taught her the technique of breathing, without disturbing the "Lay" and "Taal" of the song. Even Lata Mangeshkar acknowledges this fact and gives the due credit to Anil Biswas.
