Sun Lo Sajan Meri Baat...

Sun Lo Sajan Meri Baat- Lata Mangeshkar/ Karan Diwan-lyricist Rajendra Krishna- Music Shyamsundar.

Enough has been written about the bloody Partition of the subcontinent; of the largest known human exodus in history, across the borders of West Pakistan, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and India; of the borders created in a blatantly slipshod manner by radcliff line, before handing back power to the ‘natives’. It was, as we all know, a Brexit that left the subcontinent in shambles. It was truly a tumultuous and life-altering event for millions in modern  Indian history, the echoes of which  reverberate to this day .
M.L Anand directed "Lahore", released in the year 1949, deals with the subject of partition, the ethnic violence and the abduction of women during the time of partition in India, that tore apart the harmonious social fabric of subcontinent..
Lahore is a nice film for it's accurate portrayal of a partition victim couple who are neighbors and are in love with each other and they live in the city of Lahore. But somehow during the partition the girl is left in Lahore and the boy migrates to India with his whole family because he is a Hindu and anti-Hindu riots break out in the city of Lahore, where he used to stay with his family. And now, after partition of India, Lahore has become a part of the newly formed Islamic nation, Pakistan. When the boy reaches India he somehow meets his girlfriend's mother who was there in the same refugee camp. But, he got to know that his lover has been left alone in Pakistan. The accurate portrayal of prevalent atmostphere of the time and characters, makes this movie seem authentic and real.
Sun Lo Sajan Dil Ki Baat is another sweet duet from this soul stirring movie sung by Lata and Karan Diwan. Infact, karan Diwan has only a long aalap in the song. So is it truly called a duet ? .This question was raised by my learned friend Archana Patankar. However it is my feeling, that any song in which the two singers complement each other ,whether in kind of words or aalaps and convey the feelings of the lyrics, is a duet song. In that sense, this song may be called as duet. The superb picturization, and facial expressions of two lovebirds, convey the dormant love nestling within their hearts.

Lyrics of the Song:

Sun lo sajan ho sun lo sajan merii baat
Merii baat, jii kii baat
Chhod na denaa kahii.n meraa saath
Dil kii baat
Sun lo sajan...

Oo din hai.n rasiile ratiyaa suhaanii
Aise me.n kahale dilo.n kii kahaanii
Aaj dilo.n kii nagariyaa basaale.n
Kal kii,chotii baat
Aa~ kal kii,chotii baat
Merii baat
Jii kii baat
Sun lo sajan...

Oo saanchii kaho yaa bahaane se kahado
Mere ho tum ye zamaane se kahado
Chupp chupp ho kyu.n kuch to bolo sajan
Kahado dil kii baat 2
Dil kii baat
Merii baat
Sun lo sajan...
