Patita , released in 1953, was a tale about a destitute woman Radha (Usha Kiran) who has to suffer from being raped by her landlord, when she goes to his home to beg for time to square off the backlog of rent due. Despite her stained past and poor financial condition , a principled and compassionate youth Nirmal (Dev Anand), accepts her and her child  as she is. However he prolongs to tell his mother (Lalita Pawar) about her shady past. Their married life is happy and contened when the twist comes in the story.  when Nirmal is away for business the landlaord who had raped Radha, happens to come to Nirmal's house. Seeing Radha as Nirmal's wife he tells Nirmal's mother about how she is not pure.

The mother is shocked to hear this news. Enraged , she drives Radha away from home. The helpless and desolate Radha comes goes out of home. Her whole world has crumbled around her. The happy days are over. Nirmal is not nearby and she is left alone. Destiny has played a cruel game with her after showing her the faint glimmer of hope and revival. She complains to God about the injustice done to her. She questions God, what he has gained by unnecessary harassing her, who is already broken. What is the use of toying with broken mind. He had opened a window to offer a brief glimpse of happiness and joy, and then suddenly those happy days are gone into oblivion. Everything has changed. The sky, the land and everybody in this unconcerned world has come together to conspire against her.  What is the purpose of living now, why the breath is keeping her alive. ?

Shailendra's profound lyrics expresses the agony of a person subjected to injustice, the helplessness the angst of a broken heart. Lata's honeyed  voice, laden with pathos, conveys the turmoil of a desolate mind. Shankar Jaikishan's tune is mellifluous and melodious.
