Andhe Jahaanke Andhe raastein

Andhe Jahanke Andhe Raastein- Talat Mahmood- Patita 1953- Lyrics Shailendra- Music Shankar Jaikishan

Patita, released in 1953, was a Amiya Chakraborty directed film, which touches the sensitive subject of a destitute woman who is raped and society's views towards such helpless women. Even after 60 years, the view has not changed, therefore it was no wonder that this was a revolutionary theme that time. Due credit must be given to Usha Kiran for accepting such role, Dev Anand for enacting a compassionate youth, accepting her with all her miseries and last but not least, Director Amiya Chakraborty for making film on such a volatile subject. This was also the time when Usha Kiran was in relationship with already married Director Amiya Chakraborty.
The story of Patita revolves around a destitute woman Radha (Usha Kiran), who leaves in a shanty with her father. Nirmal (Dev Anand), a compassionate and principled young mill owner sees her begging and gives her job in his mill and later smitten by her beauty and simplicity, proposes her. In the meanwhile, to beg time for squaring off rent backlog, Radha goes to Landlord in night, and he rapes her. Devastated Radha loses her father, when he learns about her plight.
Alone and desolate Radha tries to commit suicide, when a character, Mastram (Agha), saves her, and brings her back. Mastram is the man who himself is orphan but he lives with a philosophy that you have to live this life with courage and bravery, accepting it with your both hand. There is no respite from this, there is no escape from it. He has no interest in living in this cruel, merciless and unconcerned world, but he knows that after death also there is no peace and respite from miseries. He is not welcome in this world, his presence is unwanted but he has no other option but to live as far as he breaths his last. That will be his ultimate destination. His destiny was predetermined before his coming in this world. Now he has to tread the path of life till he endures. He is instrumental in changing Radha's melancholic perception of Life.
Lyricist Shailendra is philosophic best in this song and coveys effectively the view of an orphaned but realistic view of another destitute. 'Duniya To Duniya Tu Bhi Paraya, Ham Yahaan Na Wahaa' sums up the pessimistic view, and the words Aagaj ke Din Tera Anjaam Tay Ho Chuka, Jalte Rahenge Jalte Rahenge Ye Zameen Aasmaan' reflects the abject surrender to inevitability of life. Profoundly meaning lyrics, Talat's velvet smooth voice carrying the agony of an orphan and Shankar Jaikishan's soulful tune makes this song immortal.
