Tum Kya Jaano Tumhari Yaadmein

Tum Kya Jano Tumhari Yaadmein-Lata Mangeshkar-Lyricist P.L.Santoshi-Music C.Ramchandra.

This is another film which will be remembered for Lata's soft and tender melodies. P.L.Satoshi was peroducer, Director, writer and lyricist of the film. The name of the film seems at first strange. Many people can't decipher it. This name however in the style of Laila Majnu, Shirin Farhad or Heer Ranza. Like these pairs of lovers, Shinshinaki is the female and Bubalaboo is the male lover. Obviously this was a Laila Majanu type romantic film.

The film’s plot revolves around Shin Shinaki (Rehana) who dreams of killing the man, Taishi, who had killed her parents. When the villain dies, she transfers her vengeful energies on to the man’s son. The story involves a fortuneteller, Chiang, who only surfaces publicly one day per year. The other key figure is her lover, the bandit Boobla Boo (Ranjan), who eventually falls in with her plans…
Thus, the story has nothing different from scores of other romantic stories. The film's lead pair was Rhana and Rajan. This film was the unlikely first victim of the central government’s authority to overrule the censor board, an action enabled by the Indian Cinematograph Act passed that year. Given a Universal certificate by the censors, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting banned the film because of its ‘low moral tone’ and because it `throws the glamour of romance and heroism over criminal characters, treats sacred subjects irreverently and is, in consequence, opposed to the interests of public decency and morality’. The ban was later revoked but ruined the film’s commercial chances. It was no wonder the film flopped and forgotten. However the knowledeable listners will remeber the film for C.Ramchandra's heavenly music; especially for the song " Tum Kya Jano Tumhari Yadmein", which is masterpiece from the arsenal of C.Ramchandra-Lata combination.

This orientalist fantasy with one of the most peculiar film titles was based on the modern dance ballets Sadhona Bose had been associated with on stage. Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo was one of the first films experimenting with jazz and Latin American rhythms by P.L. Santoshi’s regular composer, C. Ramchandra.  Classic songs include Yeh khilti kali koi lai… Han dai taka lai (Lata and C. Ramchandra) in a kind of question-answer mode using a fast-paced chorus, Shin’s number Aae baba yeh hansi baba yeh khushi baba (Lata) and her duet with Boobla, Kuch chahelen ho, kuch charchein ho (Lata and Kishore Kumar).

When C. Ramchandra heard the song 'Tum na jaane, kis jahan mein kho gaye' from Saza (1950), he commented to S. D. Burman that he would compose a similar melody in terms of its exquisiteness and the answer was "Tum kya jano" from 'Shin Shinake Bubla Boo' (1952).

P.L.Santoshi was then madly in love of Rehana. He used to sit outside her door waiting for her acceptance of his love towards her and crying out his heart. when the film's actress Rehana refused to open the door for her besotted lover--- the lyricist P L Santoshi---he sat outside her door all night, crying his heart out. Wecan see the reflections of his aguish and pains of miseries in the lyrics of this song. Rehana used him for success , looted him and finally ditched him. She went to Pakistan leaving the poor derilict  P.L.Santoshi in utter utter doldrum conditions. P.L.Santoshi ended his life in loneliness. One's heart can't help welling up with sympathy towards this gifted and talented man.

As for the rendering of this out of world melody, when the ultimate natural instrument, the human voice is so beautiful, and when the energy of the melody maker is divine, when the words of the poet echo the vibrations from the heart, then apart from the subtle timely beats of tabla, no more instrument is necessary.

Rehana in Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo (1952)

Another beautiful song from this film was " Ye Khilti Kali Koi Lai", sung by Lata and C.Ramchandra. CR's contribution in the song is only some explainatory words. This was fast paced song with racy rhythm bringing out the feelings of joy and ectasy. Both CR and Lata complement each other very well in tandem to make the song a treat to listen. Here is the song..
