Vande Mataram....

Vande Mataram, Sujalam Sufalam- Hemant Kumar/Lata Mangeshkar-Film Anandmath 1952- Bamkimchandra Chatterjee- Music Hemant Kumar

Anand Math, released in 1952, was a film based on Sanyasi rebellion ,which took place in the late 18th century in Bengal.  During the freedom movement, the song , written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in his book of the same name in 1882, had become a motivational song. Therefore it was obvious that the song should come in the film as well. Many people had sacrificed their lives for the dignity of National flag and this song. Even today, the song creates waves of patriotism in the heart of millions of Indians.  There are many ways to sing the song and many tunes also. Due to the British ban, the song became even more popular and an abiding source of patriotism. The couplet, Vande Mataram, received the status of a Vedic Mantra, and served as a slogan for revolutionaries. Pandit Visnu Digambar Paluskar sang it in Raga Kafi in congress conventions for several years. After his death in 1931, Pt.Omkarnath Thakur used to sing it in Raga which he called Bangiya Kafi. Paluskar did not cut any gramophone discs, but Omkarnath Thakur’s commercial recording is available and he has sung it in very slow tempo, without percussion accompaniment, and only the haunting notes of a tanpura in the background. While taking the song for Anandmath, music composer Hemant Kumar has imparted a kind of zest and patriotic flavour to the song. In the movie, this song comes twice. First part is sung by Lataji and second part by Hemant Kumar himself. The accompanying chorus adds to the feeling of pride. The powerful Sanskrit lyrics praise the Geographical and cultural  greatness and eminence  motherland and invokes an awe in the mind of listeners. The zeal and ardor with which the song has been rendered , makes this song intensely passionate,  A song not to miss....

The rich Sanskrit lyrics describes with honour ,the motherland by many adjectives, such as Sujalam, Sufalam, Shyamala, Sarala, Amla, Sushmita, Atula, Bahubal Dharini, Tarini, Suhasini ,Sumadhur Bhashini, Durga Dash prahar Dhaarini, Vidya Dayini and so on. These rich adjectives create an awe inspiring image in the heart of listener and totally sways him/her off his feet. The expressive and eloquent lyrics, the music, full of ardour and zeal and the patriotic rendering of the song... All these aspects make this song all time classic and memorable. Incidentally this is Heman Kumar's first film as music composer, although he had established himself as singer. Considering this , he had given stellar performance. In a BBC World Service poll conducted in 2003 across 165 countries, the Vande Mataram song, written by Bankim Chand Chatterjee, composed by  Hemant Kumar, sung by  Lata Mangeshkar, was voted 2nd in the "World's Top Ten" songs of all-time. Both Jana Gana Mana and Vande Mataram have five stanzas, and generally only first two stanzas are played. As a result, many Indians have either forgotten or not aware of the full song....
