Chanda Ki Chandanimein Jhoome Jhoome Dil Mera- Lata Mangeshkar- Film Poonam 1952- Lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri- Music Shankar Jaikishan

Poonam , released in 1952, was a musical romance film st in the picturesque setting of  snow covered Kullu Valley. The lead pair is Ashok Kumar and Kamini Kaushal.  Ashok Kumar while travelling in countryside meets with a car accident. Local village vaid Tripathi (Om Prakash) takes care of him. Next day, while repairing his car, Ashok hears a girl singing . Mesmerized by her golden voice he follows her, only to find that she is Vaid's daughter Chanda (Kamini Kaushal). Ashok then brings both father and daughter to his mansion . There Chanda goes under metamorphosis . She actually begins to like Ashok. Ashok however is interested in her voice and not beauty.  She on the other hand takes the job of lifting him from his bouts of depressions by instilling in him the hope and optimism about the life.  Ashok Kumar has very little to do, probably because of limited scope his character has in the film. He, therefore seems docile man busy playing sitar under the srokes of depression. It is Kamini Kaushal, who is the soul of the film. She is joyful, naughty, full of hopes and optimism. She always believes in braving the difficulties in life with courage and enjoy the life as it unfolds...exactly opposite the character traits of Ashok Kumar. So here director had chance to explore the intricacies of conflicts between two diametrically opposite minds. But the plot fizzles out in second half, when another character Bina enters with a baby claiming that Ashok is the father of her Baby. After usual twists and turns, the story ends predictably in suicide of the baby and Chanda's acceptance by Ashok.

Having said that, although the plot is weak, Shankar Jaikishan's wonderful music more than offsets the drawback. SJ had composed total nine songs and first time under SJ's baton, Lata had sung all the nine songs. Thus Lata is the body and soul of this film's music. Lata had following songs in the film....

This song comes in the film when she is overjoyed she realises that she is actually begining to like Ashok and fallen for him. For her the entire world has changed into a beautiful dream. She feels the hanging moon, surrounded by stars in the serene and cool noght, is also swinging like her mind, which is brimming up with love. Her nights are full of her beloved's fond and affectionate dreams. The fountains of joy are emerging from her mind and she cant help but to swayed over by her inner feelings.  This love has given her life a purpose and cause. Her songs  and lucid dance had new meanings and eloquence.  Love has that kind of magic on her.....

Another song by lata in this film, " Aayee Aayi raat Suhani"  is worth mentioning. It  comes in the film when Chanda find Babli (Baby Chunmun) in the Kullu Valley and brings her home. She takes immediate liking to this kid, separated by her mother. She sings the song for entertaining her. However she does not have the idea about the sudden twists and turns, the kid will bring in her contented life. The song is in happy as well as sad version.....
