Pighla Hai Sona Dur Gaganmein.....

Pighla Hai Sona, Dur Gaganmein- Lata Mangeshkar- Film Jaal 1952- Lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi- Music S.D.Burman

Jaal, released in 1952, was the second film by Guru Dutt after Baazi 1951, with same cast. The story of the film revolves around peaceful, God fearing Christian community in Goa. Their life is disturbed by an arrival of gold smuggler Tony (Dev Anand). Fisher woman Maria (Geeta Bali) falls prey to his charms. Her blind brother Carlos (K.N.Singh) and friend Simon (Ramsingh) and Lisa (Purnima) oppose the relationship.  However, Maria believes that no one is evil by birth, and he can be reformed. Tony, however, has plans to sell her to Arabs. When the cops catch up with him, he abandons her at sea. Finally Maria convinces Tony that no one is totally evil and Tony surrenders to the police knowing that Maria would be waiting for him when he returned.

This song comes in the film when Lisa, an accomplice of Tony, escapes from police dragnet,  swims  through the sea and comes aboard the boat belonging to Maria, the fisher woman (Geeta Bali).  While harvesting a boatload of fishes, she sings the song......

(On the horizon ,the sun is setting and glow of molten Gold is spreading the sky. Shadows of evening are gathering. The whole ambiance is calm and serene, yet it is trying to tell some hidden secrets of  magical nature. The trees are quiet and birds also calm , lost in their own world. The clouds are slowly gathering, the climate is mystique. Who has created such a beautiful , fascinating spell of magical world ? Be it morning or golden evening the same alluring and appealing scenes of tranquility keep repeating day after day. Whose creation is this...??)

Geeta Bali, through her fluent moments and communicative, eloquent glances, brings forth the awe, inspired in her heart, by witnessing such a magical and out of the world specter of  mother nature. Being a God fearing fisherwoman, who believes that nobody is totally evil, she also believes in the peaceful, marvelous beauty of God's creations , the unsurpassable , breath taking, peacefullness of it.

V.K.Murthy's camera captures the wonderful shots of sea waves, bathed in the glow of molten gold, and tiny fisherman boats travelling through the shafts of setting sunlight . The  chorus, following after Lata's voice gives a kind of mystic touch to entire song. Sahir has effectively brought forth the beauty of evening , through his words, and S.D.Burman's music is remarkable, fully justifying the lyrical beauty of the song.
