Aye Mere Dil Kahi Aur Chal

Ae Mere Dil Kahi Aur Chal- Talat Mahmood- Film Daag 1952- Lyricist Shailendra- Music Shankar Jaikishan.

The characteristic of a timless classic film is it's ability to remain relevant, across the barriers of time and geography with constantly changing tastes of the viewers. Daag, released in 1952 , was such a film , which even after four generations, never fails to captivate you. The lead pair is Dilip Kumar and Nimmi. The lyrics of songs were penned by Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri, while Shankar Jaikishan had composed the music of the film.
The story of film is quite engaging. The poor family of Lala Jagat Narain (Kanhaiyalal), his wife (Leela Mishra), daughter Pushpa (Usha Kiron) and step sister Paro (Nimmi) hit jackpot when a dead relative bequeaths them her wealth.Paro shares a childhood bond with Shankar — akin to friendship, but which is actually unsaid love. Although Shankar also harbours a soft corner for her, he hides his feelings behind an acerbic tongue. Despite exhortations from his ailing mother, and Paro, Shankar is not able to shed the bottle, till he leaves for the city after subjecting Paro to a vicious bout of violence.

When a reformed Shankar goes to Paro’s house to seek her hand in marriage, he is insulted by her relatives. He goes back to his old ways, till his mother dies. This has a kind of cleansing effect on him. All the ghosts of previous life, that used to exorcise him, get washed away. In the end He and Paro reunite.

This song comes in the film when Shankar gets Rs.10 from selling the clay idols. Despite the assurances given to mother (Lalita Pawar)  that he will not spend the money in booze , he inevitably lands in Liquor Shop and gets drunk. In this drunken  , in melancholic mental state, he sings this song, while coming back to home..

He complains about the cruel and unjust world surrounding him. He is fed up of it's indifference to his miseries and angst.  The surrounding pleasantries  do not lift his mood, because his heart is totally burnt by the desolateness. The world witnessed his agonies, but chose to remain unconcerned. People turned their faces and walked away from his sorrows. Both the sky and the land of this material world remained oblivious to his grief stricken, dejected life, Therefore he urges himself to go far away to a place, where there is no sign of sorrow and despair. A place there is nobody suffering from gloom and depression. A place where there is no beckoning of false hopes.

The song effectively depicts Shankar's  perturbed and foreboding mood and his rejection of this material world. Dilip Kumar has very well enacted the drunken state of Shankar through his stumbling walk, impervious to surroundings and people. His eyes echo the distressed mood of  kind hearted yet addicted Shankar.

Shailendra's lyrics bring forth the shadow of gloom and despondency. It portraits the mood of sheer rejection of this callous and dispassionate world. Talat's mellow, quivering voice is most suitable for such kind of melancholic songs and he has done justice to the lyrics. Like his earlier films "Barsat and poonam, SJ have given a stellar performance in music department. This song, therefore may be counted among one of the finest songs from SJ's arsenal.

This song comes in the film thrice. One is happy version in Talat's voice with racy tune, another is sad version (above song) in also Talat's voice. Third version is in Lata's voice. Here is lata's version of the song....
