Adapted from Victor Hugo's " Les Miserable", this film produced and Directed by Sohrab Modi, under Minerva Movietone, is a brilliant and impressive film. Modi also played Title role in the film.While adapting the book into film, the essence narration of book is kept intact. Therefore this film becomes the a remarkable commentary of conflict between have and have not and it's humane aspects.

The screenplay revolves round Kundan, the principal character in the story. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving family and desperately trying to build a new life after escaping from prison and eluding his pursuers, Kundan (the Indian counterpart of Hugo’s Jean Valjean) is the very embodiment of the perennially-exploited common man of any country. The character runs the full gamut of emotions. Nimmi plays dual role of Radha, and Uma, as Kundan's niece , who eventually dies and her daughter respectively. 

This is the song sung onscreen by Nimmi, in Uma's character, lamenting the separation from Amrit, a Freedom fighter (Sunil Dutt), who is on run with police on his feet. She loves Amrit deeply. His absence makes her desolate and her life full of sorrow. She is aware of his duties towards the nation and his struggle for nation's independence. She says even though he has his own responsibities and obligations, there is nothing left in her lonely life except his warm and fond memories. She is determined to be honest with his love and memories and she has no qualms, because it is her destiny.

Very deeply touchy lyrics from Shakeel and equally heart wrenching melody from composer Ghulam Mohammad. Nimmi on screen lives the agonies of a bleeding heart.

 All said and done, “Kundan” is yet another triumph for Sohrab Modi. It is as big a contribution to the industry as his “Sikandar” and “Pukar.”
