Hamare Baad Mehfilmein -Lata Mangeshkar-Film Baghi 1953-Majrooh Sultanpuri-Music Madan Mohan

Baghi, released in 1953 was another film after Dhun, for which music was given by Madan Mohan. The songs of the film were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. As in Dhun, the music had fair share of Lata Mangeshkar's voice. By this time, Lata's voice had become an integral part of Madan Mohan's music. In Dhun the voices of Rafi, Hemant Kumar ,Batra and Madan Mohan himself were heard. But in Baghi except the voice of Shankar Das Gupta's in song ' Tufanonse Kheli Meri Naav', there was no place for Male voice, because the hero of the film Ranjan was an action hero, proficient in swordsmanship. Naseem bano (Mother of actress Saira Bano) was the heroine. She was considered a beauty queen and used to sing her songs herself. However, she stopped singing in 1948. All the female songs of Baghi were picturized on her. For her Lata sang following songs....

There was a kind of sweetness in Lata's voice in early fifties. Naseem bano's ethereal beauty, Lata's honey dipped voice and Madan Mohan's mellifluous harmony combined in these songs to make them unforgettable. Madan Mohan, a very much gifted composer produced in combination with especially Lata and talat Mahmood, many immortal songs. Madan's music was characterised by his immense ability to meld elements of Indian classical music into a new style of Hindi filmi song. He had a keen and sensitive ear for the nuances of Indian classical tunes, and combined them with elements of Western music such as harmonies to produce a style of music that could be appreciated by both classical music aficionados and the common person alike.Unfortunately the films to which he gave the music, were B Grades films, which did not fetch him any recognition and fame. He was not adept at marketing his prowess. In addition to this, the dirty politics in film industry was not his cop. He was a straight forward and honest man from army without any cuningness, which was becoming a requisite to sustain the existence in the industry. Except sporadic success like films Bhai Bhai, Mera saya and Wo Kaun Thi, most of his films flopped, but his music to those film was revered by avid listeners.

The failure at Box office and internal industry politics played a heavy toll on Madan Mohan and he started drinking heavily. In 1975, he breathed his last. He departed in agonized state of mind. Perhaps the lyrics of this song reflects his anguish and feelings of dejection. Although he is more with us , his immortal songs are always there to comfort, cajole and soothe the listeners for infinite times, generations after generations.
