Parwanonse Preet Sikh Li- Suraiyya-Film Biwamangal 1954-Lyrics D.N.Madhok-Music Bulo C Rani
After the rise of Lata Mangeshkar in Hindi Film Music, the tradition of actress-singers like Ammerbai Karnataki, Johrabai Ambalawali, Kanan Devi, Umadevi, Shanta Apte had come to end. Noor Jehan had already migrated to Pakistan. The last link to this actress-singer tradition Suraiyya was however active in the film Industry, withstanding the onslaught of Lata's voice. After Shama Parwana, Waris, Bilwamangal was the film released in 1954, in which she acted and sang as well.
Bilwamangal had C.H.Atma and Suraiyya in lead roles. C.H.Atma a singer also was trying his hand in acting. Thus, Bilwamnagal had Actor/actress-singer in lead role. The story and lyrics of the songs in the film were written by eminent lyricist Dina Nath Madhok and music was given by Bulo C.Rani. All the songs of C.H.Atma and Suraiyya were popular when the film was released. C.H.Atma, sang the songs in Saigal style, which were appreciated by Cine buffs. As far as Suraiyya was concerned , she sang five solos and two duets with C.H.Atma as under....
  1. Ham Ishq Ke Maronko.
  2. Ham Itna Tumse Kahke Chale Jayenge.
  3. Bachpan Beeta Aayee Jawani
  4. jake Nayan Pyare Pyare Hai
  5. Diwali Ke Deeye Tujhmein Jalta Tel Hai (Duet)
  6. Ab Sooni Bhayi Re Atariya Hamar (Duet)
  7. Parwanonse Preet Sikh Lee...
Although all songs were beautifully composed the one song that stands apart is ' Parwanonse Preet Sikh Li, Shama Se Sikhe Jal Jana, Phir Duniya Ko yaad Rahega', because of it's profoundly meaning lyrics and fervour and earnestness with which Suraiyya has rendered the song.

( Whenever the word 'Love' will be uttered, the world will recall our love, because it is our love which is associated with eternal burning of flame and everlasting of fatal attraction of Parwana towards the burning flame, his ultimate passionate suicidal sacrifice of life by jumping on to it. We will learn from early morning dew, never to complain about the short existence, but to accept it without remorse. From the blossoming flowers, we will get lesson about how to shrivel and wither among the thorns without any grudge.
I will keep singing and remembering you and your love and the affectionate moments that associated with it, for the rest of my life. This is the whole purpose of my existence. a flame of hope of our reunion will still be fluttering in my bleeding , grief stricken heart. I will be happy to embrace death, fully engrossed in this aspiration of reunion. Our love will be the role model for world to follow.)

In a way, the lyrics is apt reflection of Suraiyya's ardent love towards Dev Anand, who reciprocated it with equal fervour, the adversities and hurdles through which it has to undergo, the emotional torments suffered by both, the ultimate tragic end of of that love because of external factors and egos of surrounding relatives and yet eternal flame of love that kept burning in the heart of both till their death.

बुलबुल बनकर जनम जनम
मैं तेरी खोज में गाऊँगी
यही आस लेकर है जीना
इसी आस में मर जाना
फिर दुनिया को याद रहेगा ...

These lines are enough to describe their intensely passionate, pure and virgin love. These lines fully laden with pathos are heart wrenching, and they effectively bring forth the anguish of tormented mind and angst of separation. Film Bilwamangal, therefore will be remembered for this song no doubt.
