Raat Jaagke Nikaloo Tere Intezarmein

Raat Jaagke Nikaloo Tere Intezarmein- Lata Mangeshkar- Shikast 1953- Lyricist Hasrat jaipuri- Music Shankar Jaikishan

Shikast, released in 1953, was another musical film after Aah, Aas, Naya Ghar and Patita in the same year. By 1953, Lata's voice had become an indispensable part of Shankar Jaikishan's music. In Shikast also she had five solos and two duets as follows
  1. Kare Badara Tu Na ja Na Ja
  2. Buz Gaye Aakash ke Diye
  3. O Ghan Sawrein O Ghan Sawrein
  4. Nayi Zindgise Pyar Kar Le
  5. Raat Jagke Nikaloo Tere Intezarmein
  6. Jab Jab Phool Khile (With Talat Mahmood)
  7. Mayi Zindgise Pyar Kar Ke Dekh (With Rafi)
Thus, out of total twelve songs, Lata's voice was heared in seven songs and all these songs were raging hit. In fact music was the only positive aspect of the film. Otherwise the film did well below average business due to it's slow pace, plenty of dialogues which did not move the narrative ahead, poor character development and illogical end. Even Dilip Kumar's and Nalini Jaywant's subdued performance could not salvage the film.
The story of the film revolves around a doctor Ram (Dilip Kumar), who visits his village for a day to sell his land. Earlier he had been in love with Sushma (Nalini Jaywant). The match was declined due to inter-family rivalry.  Sushma is married elsewhere and Ram embittered leaves village. Now he wants to snap the last thread attaching with village by selling his land.
He is shocked to know that widowed Sushma lives in village and and executes the zamindari authority with cruelty. aggrieved Ram tries to reason with her in vain. He abandons the idea of going back and address the grievances of poor. Sushma also wants the same. Once, during the epidemic of plague, Ram saves Sushma's son from certain death. Her heart begins to melt. The flame of love begins to rekindle in her. However in a small village, the love between a youth and a widow can be scandalous. She can see him from distance, but that is not enough for her. She yearns for his company, the affectionate moments. Lonely nights have become an enemy . The pangs of separation well up from her turbulent heart. Without him , her life has no value. She had to spend  nights after nights in utter desolateness and agonies , waiting for him.
Hasrat's words bring forth the turmoil of a bleeding heart craving for her beloved's warm, tender and fond moments of love. The precious words depict the angst &  longing of a grief stricken woman, desiring love in her gloomy and despondent life. Lata's ardent rendering in her tender voice and SJ's mesmerising music, makes the song an unforgettable musical gem.

Another song by Lata Mangeshkar in similar mood is very captivating and melodious. It is penned by Shailendra. Here is the song....
Sab Dushman Hai Pyar Ke- Lata Mangeshkar- Shailendra.
